How to grow website traffic?

If you don't have a website yet, I recommend reading my article “How should a professional website be built?”.

First, let me say this: you will never get as many users on your website as you would like, because people always want more.

Before we start, a question for you: why do you want to grow your site's traffic? I think we'll agree on the answer: “To earn more money.” Marketers have a nice saying: “If you can't turn the traffic on your site into customers, you don't need that traffic.”

Assuming you can turn traffic into customers, let's talk about how to get more users. These are not “growth hacking” tricks; they are tips that pay off through your own real effort.

Use the right keywords

As I mentioned in my previous post, you should settle on your site's topic precisely and keep the site active by publishing content on it. Small additions you make while publishing can change the traffic that reaches your site from search engines. Let me give an example from my own site. When an article about “website services” goes up on the site, type a few words related to the article's title into Google's search box and look at the suggested keywords. The keywords Google suggests are in fact the most searched ones in that region.

Search suggestions Google shows when you type “veb sayt” (website)

As the image shows, typing “veb sayt” (website) brings up keywords like “veb sayt hazırlanması” (website development) and “veb sayt yığılması” (building a website) at the top. Using these keywords now and then while writing the article, in a way readers won't notice and without breaking the sentence structure, helps traffic grow.

For more detailed keyword analysis you can use the Keywordtool.io service. Also, once your site is live, register it with “Google Search Console” and “Google Analytics”: you'll be able to track the traffic coming to your site, see which keywords bring the most users and act on it.

Build an email subscriber list

This tactic has been around for a very long time, but it still works. Sending your site's news straight to users by email helps turn a large part of your traffic into regular traffic. For example, when someone opens the site, a pop-up window can ask them to leave their email voluntarily. But it should appear only at certain intervals for each visitor and shouldn't annoy them. You can then send your site's news in bulk to the collected addresses and turn visitors into regulars.

What is a backlink? Backlinks are links to your site from other websites. This is one of the most valuable ways to grow traffic — if it's used correctly.

Consider this situation: “You ask the admin of a website to share your site's link inside a post or in another section of their site. But your site is about ‘technology news’, while theirs is about ‘food recipes’. Even if that site has high traffic, the traffic you get from it will do you more harm than good. Most likely, readers of a ‘food recipes’ site won't care about technology news and will leave your site the moment they arrive.” That's why the audience of the site giving the backlink and the audience of your site should share the same interests. Then the backlink will actually help your traffic.

Besides that, linking from one of your posts to another on your own site is also considered useful.

Be social

This is actually something we're very good at. We share everything we do on social media and enjoy it. But when it comes to sharing about work, things change.

You've opened a website and want more users. That means you already see it as a business, and you have to do your very best for it. Your site should have social media accounts and post there regularly. Links to the site from social networks also have some effect on SEO.

Advertising

All the methods above can be done for free with your own effort. With this one, you set aside a budget for advertising your site and have to spend it on the right ads. By the right ads I mean what we said under “Get backlinks”: traffic that isn't interested in your site does harm.

Facebook and Google are currently the platforms with the most targeting filters for ads. Think through the right customer profile for your ad and advertise with filters that match it. Advertising brings traffic fastest, but if the profile is chosen wrongly and the wrong people see the ad, you won't get regular traffic even after spending large sums.

Services promising big traffic in a short time

Using services that promise big traffic within 20–25 days is not recommended. Most of them can't keep their promise, and even when they do, the traffic that arrives in that short time drops just as quickly back to where it was. What matters isn't thousands of people visiting your site, but whether your site has what it takes to keep those thousands of people.

In conclusion, traffic can be grown in many other ways besides the ones above. I've shared the most effective of them with you.
